CLOVERDALE AREA

The newest and fastest growing area of Surrey is Cloverdale! This area has libraries, a museum, shopping, restaurants, community centres and a very new recreational facility (open Spring 2020) with a variety of programs and activities. Cloverdale is an area made up of mostly young families and is a safe and popular choice for international students. As populated as Cloverdale is becoming, it is still very much an area devoted to enjoying nature and parks. Currently, there are three secondary schools in Cloverdale with several newly opened elementary schools. Cloverdale is growing so quickly in popularity that a new secondary school (Salish) just opened in September 2018. This is an independent (realtor) video of the neighbourhood that is quite good.

Clayton Heights Secondary is situated in a region of new residential neighbourhoods that attract young families with children who are actively engaged in sports and activities in their community. Clayton Heights is known for offering a very friendly, welcoming atmosphere, an excellent leadership program and strong course offerings in humanities, sciences and arts. The principal and staff are very friendly and really enjoy having international students in their school. There are ESL classes available if needed, and a program for international students that includes activities and events, with the main goal being to create friendships and immerse students in the typical Canadian life and school experience.

Salish Secondary opened in August 2018. Offering the latest in innovative design and technology, Salish is located only four minutes by car and a 10-15 minute walk from Clayton Heights Secondary in the Cloverdale area of Surrey. The school has been designed to enhance and compliment the latest in learning innovation, and in addition to a strong comprehensive academic program features courses in fine arts, technology, robotics, and athletics. The Principal of Salish Secondary is extremely supportive, and has experience travelling overseas to represent Surrey and our international student program. There are no separate ESL classes for international students – it is a full English immersion experience, so if students are of a lower level in English, they may wish to look at Clayton Heights to find a more traditional ESL course option.

In the heart of downtown Cloverdale, Lord Tweedsmuir is home to one of the only Film and TV Production courses in Surrey. The school has a dynamic technology and fine and performing arts program. The school boasts one of the most successful, largest and most diverse athletic programs in the province. Lord Tweedsmuir is a school that prides itself on creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all students with a strong school emphasis on social responsibility. Lord Tweedsmuir provides unique programs such as Electronics, Computer Programming, Animation, Auto Technology, Dance, Cook Training and a Hockey Skills Academy (Grade 10). Located in Surrey’s main urban city centre, Johnston Heights enables students to excel in a full complement of academic courses including Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus and Computer Science, as well as in many Arts, Applied Skills and other elective courses. Johnston Heights is now an official World School, and the only one of its kind in Surrey, as it hosts the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for all students in grades 8 through 10 and the IB Diploma (optional – requiring additional application) for students in Grade 11 and 12. Note that Johnston Heights is Surrey’s only linear school where students study 8 courses throughout the year. A bright and modern school, Johnston Heights boasts a first class music program featuring concert band, jazz band and a world-renowned choir. A further highlight at Johnston Heights is its outstanding student leadership program. It is close to world-class fitness studios and Olympic sized pools at the Guildford Aquatic Centre.
